What Is an Oral Cancer Screening?

An oral cancer screening is a routine exam that helps detect signs of cancer in the mouth at an early stage. It includes both a physical and visual inspection of your teeth, lips, tongue, gums, the floor and roof of the mouth, the inside of the cheeks (buccal mucosa), and other surrounding tissues.

Every new patient should receive a thorough screening to identify any abnormalities or unusual changes in the intraoral and extraoral areas. Early detection is key to successful treatment, and your dentist plays a major role in spotting signs before they progress.

Oral cancer can affect any area inside your mouth, including the lips, tongue, inner cheeks, gums, floor of the mouth, or hard palate. It’s important to consult a professional right away. An emergency oral surgeon can assess and treat serious concerns quickly and help prevent complications. If you’re searching for an emergency oral surgeon near me, URBN Dental is ready to assist with fast, expert care.

Who Should Get an Oral Cancer Screening?

You might think oral cancer is rare, but thousands of individuals are diagnosed every year, often without classic symptoms.

You should get checked if you:

  • Use tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, vaping, or chewing)
  • Drink alcohol regularly
  • Have a history of HPV
  • Spend a lot of time in the sun (lip cancer risk)
  • Experience recurring mouth ulcers
  • Feel pain when swallowing or speaking.
  • Notice a persistent lump, sore, or red/white patch.

Even if you’re not in a high-risk group, yearly screening can make a huge difference. Our emergency oral surgeons make it easy, painless, and judgment-free.

How Do You Treat a Patient Using Oral Cancer Screening?

Visual exam

During the visual exam, the intraoral and extraoral cavities are examined thoroughly. This includes anything inside your mouth, your nose, neck, face and lips. Prior to screening it is recommended for the patient to remove any dental appliance (dentures, partials, etc.) that might obstruct the examination. The dentist will look for any abnormalities such as swelling, discoloration, asymmetries, ulcerations, etc.

Physical exam

The dentist will check the cheeks, head, under the chin, jaw, and oral cavity using his gloved hands to see if he can palpate any abnormal masses or nodules. The patient may be asked to do some tasks like swallowing or chewing to see whether there is any pain or discomfort on the throat, teeth or gums.
