Dental Bridge

Do you have missing teeth that leave you feeling uncomfortable? Then you should know that the gaps left can be bridged by your dentist using, dental bridges to enhance your smile. A dental bridge is a synthetic type of tooth (referred to as a pontic) which is held firmly in place by the abutment teeth located on either side of the gap. Dental bridges can be produced from a number of materials including gold, but they are traditionally made with porcelain materials so that they can blend aesthetically with your natural teeth. Dental bridges can restore your smile and also help you carry out normal mouth functions such as proper chewing, bite readjustment, fluent speech and prevention of teeth from shifting.

There are different types of dental bridges but the four major types are outlined below.

• Traditional Dental Bridge – This is the most popular type of bridge and it consists of a false tooth being held in position by dental crowns that have been cemented on each of the abutments.

• Cantilever Dental Bridge – It has similarities with the traditional bridge but the pontic is held in position by a dental crown that is bonded to just one abutment. It works fine when only one natural tooth is next to the missing tooth space.

• Maryland Dental Bridge – Maryland dental bridges are similar to traditional bridges but there is an absence of crown, instead, a metal or porcelain framework which is cemented onto the backs of the teeth abutment is used. A Maryland bridge can be used only when you have two natural teeth on each side of the space left by the missing tooth just as in the case of a traditional bridge.

• Implant-Supported Dental Bridge – Dental implants are employed instead of frameworks or crowns in this type of dental bridge. Placement of implants to support the dental bridge is made surgically for every missing tooth. This type of dental bridge is considered to be the most stable and also the strongest dental bridge.

The Cost of Dental Bridge

The Traditional or Cantilever dental bridge types would usually go for between $2,000 – $5,000 for one pontic and a crown for each tooth abutment.

Maryland bridges on the other dental bridge cost would normally be about from $1,500 – $2,500 for one pontic together with the wings or framework, fixed to the abutment teeth.

An implant-supported bridge is the most expensive of all and could cost from about $5,000 – $15,000 for a bridge together with two dental implants which will span up to three or four teeth.

A good number of dental insurance plans cover bridges, and even more recently implants as well. There may be cause to change your dental bridge between every 5 – 15 years which is dependent on how you properly care for them. Dental hygiene is one big factor that can affect the lifespan of your dental bridge.
