What are sealants and why are they done?

Sealants are protective plastic coatings painted over the teeth, especially the molars and premolars at the back of the mouth. This is done to protect the teeth from decay and cavities, minimizing the chance of bacterial infiltration. The molars and premolars have grooves and ridges that often become bedrocks for bacterial activity, leading to cavities and decay. However, painting the anti-bacterial plastic coating over those teeth prevents cavities. Dental sealants are generally meant for pediatric patients, but they’re also suitable for adults without cavities.

It’s been a long time since I’ve visited the dentist. What do I need to do?

If you haven’t visited your dentist for a long time, we recommend scheduling an appointment at the earliest moment possible. Everyone should visit dentists once every six months to ensure they have optimal oral health without cavities. If you neglect your dental visits, you won’t notice cavities and other dental problems until they worsen and affect your oral health. Please contact your nearest local dentist to determine if you have any problems.

Now that I’m pregnant, my gums are more sensitive and bleed more easily. Why?

Pregnancy can lead to hormonal changes that make your gums more vulnerable to plaque, a whitish substance that accumulates on your teeth because of bacteria, acids, and trace amounts of food particles. The continued accumulation of plaque and tartar increases bacterial decay and inflammation, making your gums sensitive and sore.

What happens if I have a dental problem when I am pregnant?

If you have a dental problem, you must contact your nearest dentist immediately. Periodontal disease and gingivitis are common amongst women during pregnancies, and studies show that 18 out of 100 cases of premature births are linked to periodontitis. As such, you must contact your dentist if you have problems while being pregnant.

My dentist says I have a cavity and that I need a filling. But why doesn’t my tooth hurt?

Cavities only affect the external parts of your teeth, i.e., the enamel, so they don’t cause any pain or discomfort. You’ll only experience pain and discomfort once the cavity goes deeper and affects your pulp tissues and nerves. But if you wait for that to happen, you’ll need root canal therapy because a filling can only stop cavities at their early stages. As such, you should listen to your dentist and get a filling.
